Connectors in cable joints

Background to the issues
Jointers like to have everything they need to make a cable joint all packed together in one box, but the issue of supplying connectors with cable joints has always been a difficult one.

Other manufacturers offer "choc-block" screw connectors, but these are not technically acceptable. They rely on just one screw to hold each core, the wall thickness of the metal tubing is often inadequate, and the thickness of the connector can cause the screw head to protrude and reduce clearances.

CTL's Definitive Solution!

With well-designed joints like the CTL Clearcast range, each kit is capable of joining many different sizes of cable. The CM0 model for instance, can be used to join 4-core cables of sizes 1.5 mm_, 2.5 mm_, 4 mm_, and 6 mm_.

One option is to include ferrules (crimp connectors) with each joint. However, in order to cover every size eventuality it would be necessary to include sixteen ferrules in a kit, when at the very most the jointer is only going to use four of these. Obviously this is wasteful and not cost effective, especially for the larger cable sizes. An added problem is that correct jointing techniques require that the ferrule be crimped with a properly matched tool, but the manufacturer and wholesaler have no control over what tool the jointer uses. There are product liability issues here. Finally, crimps are not suitable for connecting cores of different cross-sectional areas.

Some manufacturers attempt to address the connector issue by supplying one model for every cable size. Whilst this means that it is only necessary to include four ferrules, it does not resolve the problem of matched crimping tools. It also requires the wholesaler or enduser to stock sixteen different joints in order to cover 4-core cable sizes up to 300 mm_. The same cable size-range can be covered by the CTL range with just seven joints.

CTL have developed a specially designed range of mechanical connectors that provide the definitive solution to the connector issue. No other cable joint manufacturer offers anything like it. Each connector is designed to complement a particular size of CTL joint, and thus is suitable for use with exactly the same sizes of cable as is the joint. Common features include four screws per core to give a good secure connection, Allen screws (or shear-head bolts) to ensure that heads do not protrude and cause short-circuits, and thick connector walls to prevent threads stripping. CTL's "with connector range" is being introduced to run alongside the existing "without connector range" and the new connectors are also available separately in packs of four complete with a complementary Allen key
